The Rebirth of Memory
Memory of the World Filled with Colors
In 2021, ICDH launched a project called “Memory of the World Filled with Color”, with the goal of bringing UNESCO’s documentary heritage to life in a way that everyone, regardless of background or origin, could enjoy and connect with. The idea was to transform these important historical records into something vibrant, accessible, and engaging—something anyone could relate to, no matter where they were from.
To achieve this, we aligned the project with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and created a book featuring nine UNESCO Memory of the World inscriptions, each linked to a different SDG. But this project went beyond simply showcasing these records. We wanted each inscription to come alive, not only through creative illustrations but also through stories that highlighted their historical and cultural significance, connecting them to global issues we face today.
The illustrations were more than just visuals—they invited readers to explore the deeper meaning behind each inscription. Thoughtful details in the artwork encouraged readers to pause, reflect, and engage with the heritage on a more meaningful level. Each page, focused on an SDG, was crafted to inspire creative thinking about the future. What will documentary heritage look like tomorrow? What values do we want to pass on to future generations?
This project was about more than just learning—it aimed to spark imagination, encourage conversation, and foster a deeper connection with the world’s shared history. We wanted to create a space for people to reflect on the legacies we all share and consider how we can help shape those legacies for the future.
