The Discovery of Memory

Silk Road Documentary Heritage Discovery Project

The International Centre for Documentary Heritage (ICDH) has long understood the importance of cultural integration and has made considerable strides in reexamining the historical significance of the Silk Road in Central Asia. For centuries, this ancient route was a vital corridor for the exchange of civilizations, linking diverse cultures from ancient times through to the modern era. Our research has focused on uncovering the rich documentary heritage of the Sogdians—an ancient people who played a central role in economic exchanges across Eurasia. This effort culminated in the successful joint nomination of Sogdian documents to the Memory of the World (MoW) International Register, marking a major achievement in preserving these invaluable historical records.

Through projects like this, ICDH believes that the Memory of the World program can greatly contribute to building mutual understanding between nations and fostering intercultural dialogue on a global scale. As more countries come together to explore shared histories, the importance of raising regional documentary heritage to an international level becomes even more significant. Such efforts help bridge cultural divides, fostering deeper connections and blending diverse histories. Looking ahead, ICDH remains committed to promoting documentary heritage through collaborative initiatives—such as bridge research—that link countries and regions, enriching intercultural exchange and supporting global cooperation.
